That on-off cycle is hard on ignition systems and heat exchangers alike, and it's why a heater that worked fine last spring can fail the first cold night it's asked to fire back up.
What actually fails
Pilot & electronic ignition
Won't light, or lights and drops out — often a fouled ignitor, a failed flame sensor, or a control board that's stopped sending the signal. We test each in sequence instead of swapping parts on a guess.
Gas & heat pump units
OC's water runs hard, and scale buildup inside an exchanger that isn't bypassed correctly for chemical feed traps heat and accelerates corrosion from the inside. Caught early, it's a repair. Caught late, it's a full exchanger.
Won't hold temperature
A heater that overshoots, undershoots, or throws a temperature-related code usually traces back to a failed sensor rather than the burner itself.
Gas heaters, most common
A stuck bypass valve restricts water flow through the exchanger, which either trips a high-limit switch or, left alone, cooks the exchanger itself. One of the most common calls we get on older gas units.
Regulators & orifices
Low or inconsistent gas pressure shows up as a heater that lights but won't hold flame, or runs at reduced output. We check supply pressure before assuming the heater itself is at fault.
Repair or replace?
A cracked exchanger, a corroded cabinet, or a heater already past 8–10 years of hard OC use is usually a replacement conversation, not a repair one — and we'll tell you that up front rather than chasing parts on something not worth saving. Anything short of that, from ignition faults to sensor failures to bypass valve issues, is typically a single-part fix we can usually complete same visit.
